The motivation and drive behind Bump to Bub First Aid.

Hi! I’m Sophie — founder of Bump to Bub First Aid, a paediatric nurse, and most importantly, a mum to two beautiful girls, Isla and Charlotte.
For over 10 years I’ve worked as a registered paediatric nurse at a major Melbourne tertiary children’s hospital. I hold postgraduate qualifications in Paediatrics and Adolescent Health and Wellbeing, I’m an accredited Nurse Immuniser, and I’ve completed multiple professional development courses in adult education as well as paediatric emergency medicine — an area of nursing I’m deeply passionate about.
But nothing prepared me for the world of parenthood quite like becoming a mother myself.
From Nurse to Mum: The Turning Point
Over the past five years of parenting, I’ve faced the same worries, sleepless nights, injuries, and sicknesses that all parents do. The only difference? I’ve had my nursing knowledge to guide me through.
It hit me soon after my first daughter was born — new parents receive so much education about pregnancy and birth, but almost nothing about what happens afterwards. I knew from my hospital career just how critical those first aid skills are. Too often I saw children come into hospital with life-changing injuries that could have been prevented or reduced with the right first aid at the scene.
That realisation sparked the idea for Bump to Bub.
How Bump to Bub First Aid Began
During my first maternity leave in 2020 (the day before Melbourne’s first COVID lockdown, no less!), I launched Bump to Bub First Aid. It wasn’t the easiest timing, with lockdowns and a second baby in between, but by 2022 the business was running consistently.
Fast forward 3 years, and I’ve now taught over 500 group sessions, helping thousands of parents and caregivers gain the knowledge and confidence to act in an emergency.
Why I Do This Work
My mission is simple: to empower parents and caregivers with life-saving skills.
Knowing what to do if your baby is choking, struggling to breathe, or having a seizure can make all the difference. With the right first aid knowledge, parents feel calmer, more confident, and better prepared for whatever comes their way.
Every session I teach, I see the relief on parents’ faces when they realise — “I could do this if it happened to my child.”That’s what drives me.
